Encaustic Art & Oil Painting

Molten beeswax, mixed with pigment, was first used by the ancient Greeks as a means to both waterproof and decorate their sailing vessels. Later, the Egyptians painted portraits of their nobility with encaustic on their crypts. These works still exist today. After the advent of oil paints, encaustic became a lost medium for centuries. In the mid 20th century Jasper Johns introduced encaustic paints to the contemporary art world with his famous, iconic American Flag paintings.

An ancient medium that has seen a resurgence of popularity, Encaustic appeals to Elizabeth for its tactile and multi-dimensional properties. The layering effect of Encaustic lends itself to creating physical depths and spaces of transparency and opacity, like a ‘skin’ uniting the historical and the contemporary.
